Over the years, we have welded a lot of aluminum for the molding industry. Welding aluminum molds requires knowledge of the material and what can be put where. When we weld parting lines, we put on the harder rod. If it is inside the cavity, around engraving, or a crack, and at our customers understanding that there is a color, and machining difference, we will use a softer rod. This way we can reduce high frequency arc scars, and further cracking.
These two molds had slight damage along the parting lines, we do a lot of this type of repair for some of our customers, and they appreciate the small welds for working off and blending. We can go smaller yet on smaller areas that require it. If the surface is clean of oil and contamination it makes the end product virtually flawless, and new again. If the surface has previous weld and it is pitted or contaminated, that makes any weld bad that is put over it unless the affected areas are removed. The biggest problem with aluminum mold repair is having to fix water damage. If an area has lime deposits running through it, it can not be repaired with out removing all of the water damage; as a result, there will be more weld, with the possibility of movement of part dimensions.
